San Miguel de Tucumán has been declared „Historic City‟ in 1999 because of its richness in patrimonial heritage.
Today, the historic centre forms the heart of the cosmopolitan metropolis and within it the most significant civic and institutional buildings of Tucumán have been constructed.
This tour invites you to discover the capital of Tucumán, protagonist of the National History and owner of an important patrimonial legacy. With an intense cultural life and a moving nightlife the city offers varied attractions
that allow you to get to know the most authentic aspects of its historic growth and its unique present. The Plaza Independencia, the heart of the city, where the statue of „La Libertad‟ stands out. The statue was a work of artmade by the famous sculptor for Tucumán, Lola Mora. Around the square numerous buildings have beenconstructed, reflecting distinctive architectonical periods, all worthy of a short stop to appreciate them: Casa de
Gobierno (Government building), Museum Casa Padilla and the Temple of San Francisco. The Cathedral, in neoclassical style, occupies the south-eastern corner of the square and two „petit hotel‟ stand out among the rest of thebuildings: La Casa Nougués, head-office of the Board of Tourism, and the Cultural Centre Rougés. On San Martín
Street, still around the main square, we find the former Cinema Plaza, La Caja Popular de Ahorros, the seat of theprestigious Jockey Club, the former Plaza Hotel and the Economic Federation of Tucumán, all buildings of greatpatrimonial value. Other optional visits within the historic city centre are the Church „La Merced‟, the museum ofSacred Art, the Casa Avellaneda and the Basilica of Santo Domingo.
From here it is possible to get to know the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts „Timoteo Navarro‟ and on 24 deSeptiembre Street the Folkloric Museum (to be restored shortly). A little further away we find the Parque 9 de Julio,green lung of the city and a National Historical Place where we come across the Museum Casa Obispo Colombres.
It is also recommended to visit the surroundings of Plaza Urquiza where and interesting architectonical ensemblecan be found, composed of the Casino, the Legislature and the San Martín Theatre.
