Downtown City Lights

Excursions

After starting from the hotel you visit the bar “La Ideal”, where scenes from the movie “Evita” were shot, starring the actress and singer Madonna. Then the circuit goes on along Corrientes Avenue until number 348, a location mentioned in the Tango “A media Luz” (“Halflight”), and then you get to Tango Square, just in front of Luna Park arena.

From there the circuit moves on along Avenida de Mayo (the first avenue to be designed following the Madrid style of La Gran Vía) until the emblematic café “Tortoni”. It is time then to leave San Nicolás to enter the neighbourhood of Monserrat, where you can see the Tango Museum “Botica del Ángel” in Luis Sáenz Peña 541; in this quarter you can also visit three traditional milongas (tango ballroom) dating from the 30’s and 40’s:

“La Nacional”, in Alsina 1400, “Niño Bien” in Humberto Primo 1400, and “Dandi” in Piedras 900. From here, the circuit goes into San Telmo, where the first highlight is the café “El Federal” in Carlos Calvo and Perú, where you will fly back in time to the years of Rosas. Very near this bar there is the famous workshop of Martiniano Arce (in Perú 1089), where you can learn the secrets of “fileteado”, decorative painting in the traditional porteño style.

The next point is on 1500, Defensa street, where you will know the “Centro Cultural Torcuato Tasso”. Going down the same street, at number 1000, you can see Esteban de Luca’s house, and at number 755, under an important historical building dating from the XIXth century, you can see a part of the otherwise disappeared “Zanjón de los Granados”, the ditch that identifies the site of the First Foundation of Buenos Aires (year 1536).

Down there you can go through a whole labyrinth of tunnels seeing ramparts, walls, floorings, wells and bottomless holes, all of them built and destroyed between 1730 and 1865.

The end of the tour takes you to Paseo Colón and Independencia, the corner where you can find old Edmundo Rivero’s bar “El Viejo Almacén” and the lane Dr. M. J. Giuffra, where at number 371 there is the theater “Scala de San Telmo”

Please remind: Since on certain days some of these places do not open, the tour must adapt to this circumstance.
